What are the Requirements to Become a SWAT?

You've seen them in movies a thousands times--the heroic men and women who come to the rescue during hostage situations, terrorist attacks, and countless other emergencies. Dressed in black and armed to the teeth, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit comes in to diffuse the situation, capture the bad guys, and restore order. However, you do not need to go to the theater to see these guys in action. Not only do SWAT teams really exist, but they also actively recruit. However, given the dangerous situations they typically face, it should be no surprise that there are fairly strict requirements to become a SWAT member.

Requirements to Become a SWAT Team Member

Although there are actually several paths to becoming a SWAT team member, below represents one of the most direct and least difficult progressions:
  • Step 1: If you are overweight, a smoker, or drinker, get yourself in shape and eliminate any bad habits you might have.
  • Step 2: Join your local police force. This includes going through the academy, receiving special training, and passing all relevant exams.
  • Step 3: Spend at least two to three years on the force in order to master the ropes, make contacts, and demonstrate aptitude.
  • Step 4: Apply to join SWAT through your commanding officer(s). Be prepared to go through a battery of physical, medical, and psychological exams thereafter.
  • Step 5: Ace your interview with the SWAT review board.
  • Step 6: Undergo rigorous training and testing until you have mastered all of the SWAT protocols and field manuals.
It might seem odd to think that in just six steps you could become an urban commando just like in the movies. In reality, however, each one of the above steps can be incredibly difficult, which explains why SWAT has managed to remain such an exclusive and elite fighting force for so long.
