What are the Requirements to Become a Life Coach?

Help Individual Achieve Their Goals
Do you want to help someone to reach his or her ultimate goal, whether that is to lose weight or to start a new business? Sometimes individuals need a bit of motivation and guidance to get on the right track and achieve their goals in life. Life coaches can help them find this motivation. There are several types of life coaches, including personal coaches, career coaches, and life balance coaches, who help you learn to balance your career, relationship, and family life. You can coach individuals in communication skills, how to live a healthy life, work through a relationship, or advance professionally. As a life coach, you help individuals develop motivation, acquire specific skills and obtain certifications. You can help your clients to reach their full potential, make a personal transition, and understand themselves.

The Requirements to Become a Life Coach
Although certification is not required to become a life coach, with the advent of more individuals working as life coaches, professional development is important to obtain a level of credibility. Curriculum for certification includes psychology, sociology, adult development techniques, counseling, behavior modification, goal setting, and mentoring. The International Coach Federation (ICF) offers testing to become a certified coach. The ICF requires 250 paid hours of coaching, 60 hours of which is coaching specific. It can take approximately six to twelve months to earn an ICF certification. Training to become a life coach may include 750 hours of personal coaching hours. The requirements to earn a master's certification include 2500 coaching hours.
