What are the Requirements to Become a Sniper?

For many, scoring a corner office is as good as it gets. But if you're the rare type of individual who envisions succeeding best in high pressure, high risk situations--and if you're a naturally gifted marksman--you may want to consider become a law enforcement sniper. Snipers work as part of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams, stationed on top of high buildings or other strategic vantage points. They are most often deployed in hostage situations, and are trained only to shoot as a last resort, for example when a hostage's life is immediately threatened.

Requirements to Become a Sniper

Shooting accuracy is only one of the requirements to become a law enforcement sniper. To make this your career path, you also need to complete the following steps:
  • Earn a college degree. Because snipers are members of law enforcement teams, and because most agencies require their employees to have bachelor's degrees, you should pursue a degree in a related field (criminal justice, anthropology, etc.)
  • Attend a police academy. These training programs last between six months and one year, and cover essentials such as arrest procedures, investigation techniques, shooting skills, and physical training.
  • Work as a police officer. Make sure that the agency you choose has a SWAT division; you need to work as a uniformed officer for about three years before being considered for a SWAT position.
  • Become a SWAT team member. This process entails passing examinations that assess your physical and psychological condition, as well as completing interviews and demonstrating firearms proficiency.
  • Become a sniper. Once a member of SWAT, you can apply to begin your sniper training, where you're taught how to shoot accurately in all types of conditions.
