Legal Assistants Keep Lawyers on Task

Legal assistants are the backbone of the law office, performing daily tasks that keep the office running smoothly. You keep the attorney on task and on top of his or her caseload. Legal assistants can be found anywhere there are lawyers, including the court system, insurance companies, public and private law offices, or in healthcare facilities.

Some legal assistants get on-the-job training, but most employers prefer to hire individuals to that have formal training. Programs are offered that lead to either an associate's or bachelor's degree. It is important to have problem solving, critical thinking, and verbal and written communications skills.

Requirements to Become a Legal Assistant
A bachelor's degree in legal studies typically takes four years to earn and requires you to complete general education courses such as history, literature, mathematics, and science courses. The subject-specific requirements to graduate include:
  • Legal ethics
  • Legal terminology
  • Civil case procedures
  • Structure of state and federal court systems
  • Legal research and analysis
  • Computer skills
  • Legal documents
Many programs also require you to complete a certain number of hours as an intern to obtain practical experience in the field. Once you obtain your education, you have the capability to work in any number of jobs, because of the intense training you receive. The knowledge can carry over into any number of job opportunities.
