What are the Requirements to Become a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a type of physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists also perform minor cosmetic procedures such as dermabrasion and laser therapy. Becoming a dermatologist requires many years of formal training including medical school. Upon receiving a degree and licensing, dermatologists usually gain employment in small to medium size clinics or become self-employed in private offices.

What are the Education Requirements to Become a Dermatologist?

In order to become a doctor in dermatology you must posses the proper education and licensing. All states require the licensing of physicians, which includes dermatologists. In order to pursue a career as a dermatologist, the following requirements must be met:
  • 4-year bachelor's degree
  • 4 years of medical school with degree
  • Internship
  • 4 years of residency
  • Certification exam
Internship begins after graduation from medical school and consists of medical training at a hospital under supervision. Following internship is clinical training, known as residency. Residency requirements for dermatologists consists of a one year program in either emergency medicine, family practice, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, or pediatrics. An additional three years of residency must be completed in accredited dermatology. Upon completion, you must pass an exam to receive certification by the American Board of Dermatology.
