What are the Requirements to Become a Makeup Artist?

Have a Fun and Exciting Career as a Makeup Artist

A makeup artist is just that--an artist. A makeup artist does not necessarily need to enhance someone's looks. Sometimes the job requires making someone look hideous, old, or out of this world. You may have an impression that a makeup artist sells cosmetics or just helps people apply lipstick, but that is far from the entirety of the job.

A makeup artist can work as part of a large production, preparing actors to appear on stage or television, as well as prepping models for a photo shoot. This creates the opportunity to work with famous actors, potentially from anywhere in the world. A good makeup artist knows how to do modeling and create molds of an actor's faces using plaster casts. Using this plaster cast mold, you can create a mask that fits like a glove. It is essential to understand how to make dentures, fabricate blood and vessels, artificial noses, torn limbs, and other facial features that make someone look young or old.

Requirements to Become a Makeup Artist

You have a great deal to learn as a makeup artist. The typical curriculum includes anatomy, corrective makeup, safety and hygiene, visual art, hairstyling, and making wigs. You need to understand how to create and apply various makeups and prosthetics. You also need to know how to use ventilation pieces, animatronics, and prop fabrication. You can expect to spend one to two years in school gaining hands-on training. Working as a makeup artist can be exciting, creative, and just plain fun.
