A deacon is a male or female who is ordained by a bishop of a church. A deacon serves the church and instructs churchgoers in biblical teachings. Requirements to become a deacon vary depending on the religion, some may require formal education and others may not.

What are the Educational Requirements to Become a Deacon

In some religions such as the Methodist religion, becoming a deacon requires formal education. According to the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry the requirements for becoming a deacon for The United Methodists Church can be achieved in one of four routes and is as follows:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and a master's Degree of divinity or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree and master's degree from an approved school of theology or seminary
  • Bachelor's degree and master's degree in a specialization and basic theological studies
  • Candidates older than 35 years of age may posses a bachelor's degree with professional certification and basic theological studies

Because deacons represent the church, they are required to show good character and uphold the values of the institution they serve. Deacons should have strong moral character, a solid reputation in the community, and a proven commitment to their faith.
