Become a Hair Stylist and Enjoy a Career Helping Others Look Their Best If beauty and personal appearance have always been your passion, it might be time for you to consider a career in the cosmetology field. Specifically, you might want to think about joining a profession that is both rewarding and challenging--become a hair stylist and join the growing field of cosmetology. The requirements to become a hair stylist are relatively straightforward, but all states require hair stylists to be licensed, so you'll have to meet certain requirements. Hair Stylist Education In most states, you must graduate from a state-approved cosmetology school to become licensed as a hair stylist. Specific educational requirements vary from state to state, so be sure to check the regulations where you live. In most places, you are required to have completed a high school education before you can go on to study hair styling. Once you have a diploma or GED, you can move on to a variety of programs. You can choose from a state-run barber or cosmetology school or, in other cases, you may choose to attend a private academy. Vocational schools and private programs can offer education in cosmetology. Hair Stylist Licensure All states require personal appearance workers, including hair stylists, to be licensed. To obtain your license, you must complete your educational program and then pass a test, consisting of a written examination and a practical exercise. You must obtain your license before you are able to legally work as a hair stylist. Cosmetology isn't for everyone--hair styling is a unique job and takes an artistic eye and excellent people skills.
