What are the Requirements to Become a CPA?

Become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

A certified public accountant (CPA) is an accountant that is certified by their State Board of Accountancy. In order to become a CPA you must have the proper education and possess a state certification or license. Each state has a board of accountancy and has their own requirements for licensing. CPA's analyze, prepare, verify financial documents, and advise clients on tax matters. CPA's also provide services such as the preparation of financial statements, audits, preparation of taxes, and accounting services.

What type of educational requirements is there?

Generally, most states have the following requirements to become a CPA:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field
  • 150 semester hours of college coursework prior to state exam
  • Continuing education
Some states may substitute accounting experience for a college degree. However, semester hours are still required.

What other requirements to become a CPA are there?

In order to receive licensing or certification as a CPA you must apply for and take an exam administered by the appropriate state board. The exam is a uniform four-part exam that is prepared by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is used by all states. The four-part exam does not have to be taken and passed at one sitting. You may choose to take and pass one section at a time as long as all sections are passed within an 18-month period.

Additionally, most state boards require the applicants to be a resident of the state in which they are applying, or maintain a physical office.

What Other Qualifications are Needed?
