What are the Requirements to Become an Athletic Trainer?

As one of the most satisfying professions in the health care industry an athletic trainer applies his or her skills to the rehabilitation of those who are recovering from injuries, as well as to the prevention of injury in those who are at risk, including sports players, performers, industrial workers, and patients of all ages at a physical rehabilitation facility.

Due to the nature of the work performed by an athletic trainer, the requirements to become a professional in this field include a bachelor's degree at the very least, with the large majority of trainers holding a master's degree. Certification is also a requirement in most places, which is acquired through an examination that will test the applicant in areas such as injury prevention and professional development.

Becoming an athletic trainer takes drive and a love of people. Because an athletic trainer can work with people of all ages for extended periods of time, exceptional social skills can be helpful and a professional attitude is required when dealing with all patients, athletes, other colleagues and doctors.

The course work required to become an athletic trainer will include subjects such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, exercise, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and others related to the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. Some areas will also require a 2 year internship prior to certification. This internship will be carried out under the supervision of a physician or experienced athletic trainer.

While not an official requirement, athletic trainers should maintain good health, as well as exercise regularly to stay in shape. Athletic trainers should also stay current with the latest techniques, equipment, and protective gear to be used by those under their care, as well as the latest trends in injury prevention, dieting, and therapy.

An athletic trainer is a health care professional that is in charge of treating different forms of injury as soon as they happen. Because of this they may be the first contact with a trained professional a patient may have. This means that certification must be renewed every three years, and training courses must be updated in a periodic manner so as to maintain excellence for as long as you remain active.
