What are the Requirements to Become a Funeral Director?

Funeral Director: Make A Career Out of Compassion

Are you passionate about helping people facing end-of-life challenges when friends and loved ones pass away? If you are, a career as a funeral director could be ideal for you. The requirements to become a funeral director do vary from state to state, but most funeral directors have some formal training.

Training to Become a Funeral Director

A degree in mortuary science can take two to four years to complete, and you may study everything from business management and funeral home client service to anatomy and physiology. Funeral Directors require a broad education to be prepared for a professional opportunity.

All states require funeral directors to be licensed. In most states, licensure requires that you:
  • Be 21 years old
  • Have completed a formal program
  • Pass a qualifying exam
  • Complete a one-year apprenticeship
Although not required by all states, some states require aspiring funeral directors to become licensed embalmers. Even if it is not a requirement to become a funeral director in your state, being a licensed embalmer can enhance your career opportunities.

Perhaps most important among the requirements to become a funeral director has to do with your personality. You need to be compassionate and empathetic. As a funeral director, you'll be working day to day with people facing intense grief and sorrow. Having those personal qualities only makes you more desirable as a candidate when the time comes to apply for jobs as you pursue your career.
