What are the Requirements to Become a Dentist?

Dentists perform services on teeth and tissues of the mouth. They perform examinations, extractions, surgery, and tooth repairs on patients. Dentists may choose to be a general practitioner or become a specialist such as an endodontist, maxillofacial surgeon, oral pathologist, oral and maxillofacial radiologist, orthodontist, pediatric dentist, periodontist, prosthodontist, or a public health dentist. The licensing of dentists is required in all states. In order to become a dentist proper schooling is required along with passing a written and practical exam.

What are the Education Requirements to Become a Dentist?

A minimum of two years of college-level education is required prior to admittance in to dental school. Most student possess a bachelor's degree prior to dental school however, you may be allowed to complete your bachelor's degree while attending dental school. Four-years of dental school is required.

What other Requirements to Become a Dentist are there?

Prior to being admitted into dental school the applicant must take and pass a Dental Admissions Test. Upon completion of dental school, the applicant must possess a degree in dental, Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

What type of Coursework Is Required?

In college, aspiring dentists should take classes that prepare them for dental school, including biology, chemistry, health, mathematics, physics, and science. In dental school, various courses and laboratory work is required. Your classes might include higher-level science courses, courses on dental procedures and science, and clinical practice.
