What are the Requirements to Become a Photographer?

As a professional photographer, your job is to capture images that tell stories, document events, and convey important messages. While anyone with a camera can theoretically do these things, it can take years to master the timing, lighting, and composition of an expertly produced shot. This helps to explain why, even with the proliferation of point-and-shoot digital cameras and editing software, job prospects for professional photographers are expected to be favorable over the next decade.

Becoming a Photographer without Training

Admittedly, some photographers have a natural gift. With little or no training, they can render professional stills worthy of publication. Individuals in this category often sidestep the more traveled path and simply send their portfolios to studios, magazines, and agencies unsolicited. However, this approach can be risky. Because more than half of all photographers are self-employed, business acumen and client management are essential. So while you may have a gifted eye for photos, this does not necessarily mean that you are also able to balance books, secure new clients, and manage a private studio.

Becoming a Photographer with Training

If you are like most people, you probably need at least some formal instruction. A bachelor's degree in photography is the gold standard, but not all agencies have the same requirements to become a photographer. You may qualify for positions with sufficient undergraduate coursework in fields like:
  • Photography
  • Cinematography
  • Lighting
  • Graphic design
  • 2D and 3D art
  • Photo/Video editing
Either way, it is important that you work closely with more experienced photographers to more fully develop the skills learned in the classroom. In addition to honing your skills, you'll gain valuable connections in the industry.
