What are the Requirements to Become an EMT?

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) act as first responders during accidents, illnesses, and injuries. Usually dispatched after a 911 call, an emergency medical technician rushes to the scene in order to provide immediate first aid and help stabilize patients until they can receive additional care in a hospital or medical facility. Trauma, cardiac arrest, fractures, and bleeding all come fairly standard with the job, and some positions also require that you drive an ambulance as well.

Requirements to Become an Emergency Medical Technician

Because a standard EMT is expected to handle everything from heart attacks and automobile accidents to childbirth and gunshot wounds, all States require formal training for aspiring emergency medical technicians. You can choose from three different levels of EMT training (basic, intermediate, and paramedic), during which you explore areas such as:
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Administering medication
  • Anatomy
  • Biology
  • Pharmacology
Thereafter, you must complete licensing and certification. The exact licensing requirements to become an EMT vary somewhat from region to region, but certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or a state-administering board is usually mandatory.

There are many other requirements for this profession as well. EMTs should be physical fit, emotionally stable, agile, and dexterous. In addition, they should have strong eyesight, color vision, and a strong constitution. If you are someone who becomes squeamish at the site of blood, consider a more administrative position within the healthcare industry.

Retraining as an Emergency Medical Technician

Because medicine and technology change at such a rapid pace, most States require that you become re-certified as an EMT every two years. Through this additional licensing, you learn about the most recent technical and regulatory developments in medicine and emergency treatments.
