What are the Requirements to Become a Psychologist?

There are various types of psychologists, all of which study the behavior and mental health of patients. Clinical psychologists usually provide services in clinics, hospitals, schools, or their own private practice. Psychologists who specialize in research usually perform investigations of human behavior. Psychologists perform a variety of duties some of which include clinical studies, interviews, investigations, and observations.

What Are the Educational Requirements to Become a Psychologist?

Generally, a master's degree or a doctoral degree is required in order to become a psychologist. A master's degree takes approximately four years of schooling. Earning a doctoral degree takes between five to seven years. A master's degree allows you to work as an industrial-organizational psychologist or a psychological assistant conducting research and evaluations. Earning a doctoral degree allows you access to more employment opportunities such as working in a clinical environment or a private practice.

Are There any License or Certification Requirements?

Most states require psychologists who provide any type of care to be licensed. State laws vary depending on what services are offered and the area of specialization. All states administer an examination that must be passed in order to become licensed or certified. Generally, a doctorate degree in psychology, a one-year internship, and one to two years of experience is required in order to be eligible for a state license.

What Are Some Examples of the Requirements for Different Psychologists?

In order to become a psychologist for the federal government you must have completed 24 semester hours of college, including some statistics courses, for an entry-level position. When choosing to become a school psychologist, most states require a specialist degree. Some states may allow a master's degree.
