What are the Requirements to Become a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a type of physician who specializes in mental health. A psychiatrist performs diagnosis of a patient through psychotherapy and also treats mental illness. Treatment is usually in the form of medication or therapy. Many years of schooling and training is required in order to become a psychiatrist.

What Are the Education Requirements to Become a Psychiatrist?

In order to become a psychiatrist, you must posses a bachelor's degree in addition to four years of medical school. To enter medical school, you must posses a minimum of three years of college coursework and/or a bachelor's degree. You must also complete and pass the Medical College Admissions Test with a sufficient score. Additionally, medical schools also require the submission of transcripts, Medical College Admissions Test scores, any letters of recommendation, and an admissions interview.

Medical schools consider additional qualifications of applicants that lead to the decision of admittance of the applicant. Such qualifications include but are not limited to:
  • Extracurricular activities participation
  • Good character
  • Sufficient personality
  • The ability and quality of leadership
What Are Other Requirements to Become a Psychiatrist?

Four years of psychiatric residency training must be completed after medical school. Psychiatrists must also apply to become licensed through their local state agency. Additionally, in order to practice as a psychiatrist, a certification is mandatory through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. A certification is gained by the completion and passing of a written and oral exam.
