What are the Requirements to Become an Accountant?

The requirements to become an accountant are fairly straight forward though they will vary from state to state or district. Each state and district sets its on standards as to the requirements to become an accountant but there are some general guidelines that you can expect regardless of your location.

To begin with a high school diploma or its equivalent is required in all areas of the United States. Beyond this a four year Bachelor of Science degree in accounting will also be required. Some states require a minimum of 120 College Credit Hours (CCH) while other states have raised their requirements to 150 College Credit Hours (CCH).

There are two year programs widely available but at best these will qualify you for a position such as bookkeeper and will not qualify you to take the state CPA exam. Still a two year degree can be a very good way to gain entry into a field where most companies will assist you with furthering your education.

Some of the traits that you should have if considering a career as an accountant include:
  • A love of numbers
  • Very detail oriented
  • A high degree of integrity
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A high degree of computer literacy
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills
Accounting can be a very good field for people with the proper skill set and personality traits. From bookkeepers to Specialized Certified Public Accounts the demand in this field has been steadily growing as more and more government regulations have caused even small businesses to be required to keep ever more detailed records. Accounting is one field that has shown no decline in demand.
