What are the Requirements to Become a FBI Agent?

As members of the official law enforcement and investigative unit of the United States government, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents are responsible for 200 separate categories of federal law and national security. A typical day could include any of the following activities, both in the field and at regional headquarters:
  • Monitoring court-authorized wiretaps
  • Conducting surveillance
  • Examining business records
  • Investigating white-collar crime
  • Supervising a range of undercover assignments
Formal Requirements to Become an FBI Agent

Given the sensitivity of the above duties, the requirements to become a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent are quite high. You must be a college graduate with either three years of professional work experience or an advanced degree and two years of work experience before you can even apply. In addition, you must also meet one of the following criteria:
  • A degree in accounting, information technology, electrical engineering, or computer science
  • Fluency in at least one foreign language
  • A law degree from an accredited school
  • Three years of relevant full-time professional experience
If you successfully meet all of the above and are accepted into the program, be prepared for four and a half months of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

The requirements to become an FBI agent are fairly rigid. Moreover, however strict the certification requirements might seem today, there is a good chance that they could become even more difficult as international terrorism, domestic crime, cybercrime, and related issues necessitate even more security measures during the application process. If you are thinking about becoming an FBI agent, now is a good time to start.
